The European squid is a marine cephalopod commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Unlike fish, squid are invertebrates and belong to the group of molluscs. The squid has an elongated, streamlined body with a pair of large eyes and ten appendages around its mouth. Eight of these are shorter arms, while the remaining two are longer tentacles used to capture prey. Its body is covered by a thin, flexible skin, and a fin runs along the rear part of the body, helping it move through the water.
Squid are active predators and feed mainly on small fish, crustaceans, and other marine organisms. They are fast swimmers and can quickly change direction when hunting or escaping from predators. When threatened, they can release a cloud of ink into the water, allowing them to escape while confusing their attacker.
The European squid is an important species in Mediterranean fisheries and is also well known as a popular seafood species.
