The common cuttlefish is a marine cephalopod found throughout the Mediterranean Sea and in parts of the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Despite its name, it is not a fish but an invertebrate belonging to the mollusc family. The cuttlefish has a broad, oval-shaped body surrounded by a continuous fin, which helps it move smoothly through the water. It has eight short arms and two longer tentacles that are used to catch prey. Inside its body is a hard internal structure known as the cuttlebone, which helps it control its buoyancy.

One of the most impressive features of the cuttlefish is its ability to rapidly change the colour and patterns of its skin. This remarkable camouflage helps it hide from predators, approach prey, and communicate with other cuttlefish. It is an active predator that feeds mainly on small fish, crabs, shrimps, and other marine animals. When threatened, it can release a cloud of dark ink into the water, creating confusion and allowing it to escape.

The common cuttlefish is an important species in Mediterranean waters and is also well known as a popular seafood species.
