The giant tiger prawn is a large marine shrimp belonging to the Penaeidae family. It is native to the Indo-West Pacific and Atlantic Ocean region and is widely known for its distinctive dark stripes across the body and tail, which give the species its common name.It has a long, slender body covered by a hard shell, with a pointed rostrum extending forward from the head. Its colour can vary from greenish-brown to grey, with characteristic dark bands and lighter areas along the body. The legs and antennae are generally lighter in colour.

The giant tiger prawn lives mainly on sandy or muddy seabeds, where it spends much of its time close to the bottom. It is an opportunistic feeder and consumes a variety of organisms, including small fish, molluscs, crustaceans, worms, and organic material. The species is particularly important in commercial aquaculture and fisheries because of its large size and high value as a seafood species. It can reach a considerable size compared with many other shrimp species.
