Dentex gibbosus

The pink dentex is a marine fish belonging to the Sparidae family. It has a strong, elongated body and a characteristic head shape that becomes more pronounced as the fish grows. In large adults, a noticeable hump can develop on the forehead, giving the species a distinctive appearance.The body is generally reddish-silver in colour, while the caudal fin has a pinkish tone and is usually bordered by a narrow black edge. A small dark spot may also be visible behind the rear part of the dorsal fin, together with darker markings around the pectoral and gill-cover areas.

The pink dentex is usually found between 20 and 220 metres in depth. It inhabits rocky and gravelly seabeds, as well as sandy areas close to rocks. Younger fish tend to stay closer to the shore, while larger adults are more commonly found farther offshore.It is a predatory species that feeds mainly on crustaceans, fish and cephalopods. The species can grow to more than one metre in length, although individuals around 60 cm are more commonly encountered.
